Nursing and Residential Homes and Specialist Centres

Many people who are living in nursing or residential homes require Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and/or Neuropsychology. The reasons for this are the same as for people living in their own homes – function, mobility, reduction in pain and stiffness, use of limbs for activities of daily living, help with memory, co-ordination and planning skills, help with communication, swallowing, cognition, emotional and coping strategies.

There is also often an additional need in these locations. This is to the mutual benefit of both the residents and the staff, saving time, easing manual handling for staff and helping the resident to feel more independent. It promotes more dignity and provides better quality of life.

For some of these residents, the treatment required, whichever form of therapy, would be to maintain a certain level of ability and for others, it may be more of a rehabilitation approach to improve on existing ability.

Many people who live in residential or nursing homes moved there directly from hospital, where it has been determined that they are currently unable to return to their own homes due to the amount of care needed. This is often a permanent need, but with the right type and level of treatment can sometimes be temporary, until the level of care needed becomes low enough to be provided at home.

Residents who live in specialist centres for people with disability usually require frequent and on-going Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and/or Neuropsychology.

Neuro Rehab UK Ltd frequently sets up specialist services in these types of centres and provides the on-going therapies. The residents themselves sometimes fund this, but often there is help available to cover all or part of the cost through funding panels such as social services.
